About the Man
“Old Rough and Ready” was a military man, not a politician. In fact, not only was he the first president who didn’t serve in the Legislature before becoming president, he hadn’t voted in any election prior to his own.
He won the election because he was the most popular general from the Mexican War. His strict political views made him tough to deal with and that’s why his sudden death in 1850 had political conspiracy theorists raving up until 1991.
Sanitary conditions of 1850s Washington left much to be desired. President Taylor ate a bowl of cherries and drank a pitcher of milk on July 4th, 1850, after a day of mingling with the public. He came down with stomach cramps and was dead 5 days later. It does indeed sound like a conspiracy theorists dream, but alas when his body was exhumed in 1991, rumors of assassination were put to rest.
His death paved the way for the more pliable Millard Fillmore, and in hindsight it’s clear to see how these events led us closer and closer to Civil War.
I used a shortened version of this quote for Zachary Taylor – “The idea that I should become President seems to me too visionary to require a serious answer. It has never entered my head, nor is it likely to enter the head of any other person.”
