About the Man
You may think that my favorite part of doing this series is studying the political prowess of each president or learning about their personal lives. While it’s true, I do enjoy both of those aspects, what I enjoy most about the painting process is their haircuts and facial hair. So when we get to Mr Van Buren, it appears as though I’ve reached the pinnacle of that artistic high.
I’ve actually been quite worried about getting to the modern president because somewhere along the way mankind in general traded their svelte hairstyling’s for a boring business man cut. So God bless you, Martin, even though most of your opponents made fun of your for those looks and Davy Crockett is quoted as saying “It would be difficult to say from his personal appearance whether he was man or woman but for his large whiskers.”
The quote I used from Van Buren is “It is easier to do a job right than to explain why you didn’t.” Van Buren was the 8th President, the 3rd president to serve only one term and the first to be born a US Citizen (all others before him were born before the Revolution). He was a rather short man, standing just below 5’6 and he spoke fluent Dutch. He died in 1862 at the age of 80.
