About the Man
The first son of a former president, John Quincy Adams’ presidency was far from a glorious one. He accomplished far more prior to and after being president than he ever did in office. He held the office from 1825 to 1829 and lost a very close election to Andrew Jackson. He didn’t even attend Jackson’s inauguration. Only two other presidents have not attended their successors swearing in (the other two were his father and Andrew Johnson).
In my research of him and all photographic and painted representations, he seemed a sour and angry little man. I painted him as such. His staunchness could be due to his learnedness (he knew 7 languages and was one of America’s greatest diplomats), or it could be due to his conviction over compromise stance. He preferred discipline over convenience and therefore he fought an unending battle during his presidency.
“Duty is ours, results are God’s.”
