About the Man
John Adams, the second US President, was President from 1797 to 1801. Though he was a fairly intolerable man, the legacy he left is lasting. He kept the US out of war by maintaining peace and firmly established both a separate division for the Navy and a stronger base for the Army. Yet he was still an irritable and insecure man whom, after his son won a controversial race to become the 6th President wrote “No man who ever held the office of president would congratulate a friend on obtaining it. He will make one man ungrateful, and a hundred men his enemies, for every office he can bestow.”
Also of interesting note, the only two Presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence, Adams and Jefferson, both died on the same day, July 4th 1826. Adams final words were “At least Jefferson survives” but little did he know, Jefferson died two hours prior.
