Shorthanded is just a brick and mortar front to my internet store, but in reality this entire site is just me. My name is John Holcomb and I’m a kid from Kansas who has a dream of being an artist. Money from each and every purchase made in my shop goes directly to me and it helps me fund more paintings, more artwork. To those who laughed at a United Plates print (it’s meant to be funny!), to those that admired a president painting, to those that e-mail me saying they like my work, to those that spent their hard earned money on a print – seriously, thank you. As if these pixels on a computer screen would ever convey how much each and every purchase means to me, how it keeps me going. It can’t, so maybe one day I’ll meet you all and say thanks in person!

To anyone who purchased my art and plans to display on your walls or give it to a friend – it’s an honor. I’m just a one-horse-town kid, really – there’s 314 other people here. My wife works for the small town newspaper. Everyday I get to wake up and do what I love, I draw pictures for a living. Then I let the dog out when he whines.

I have at least 5 projects swirling in my head at all times, even I don’t know which one is next. Keep checking my site and when I know you’ll know! That’s all for now!

At least 10% of all proceeds go towards charitable organizations I believe in, ones that help feed and nourish the hungry in both body and spirit. Here are some great charities to look into: Charity Water, Compassion International, Come & Live, Harvesters (Greater Kansas City area) & Invisible Children.

Hum Drum Bio

John Holcomb is a self-sufficient artist/illustrator based in Topeka, Kan. Although he had never taken an art class until college, John could always be found sketching growing up.

After graduating from high school, John attended John Brown University with the intent to study digital media. Through his college programs, John switched his major to graphic design with a minor in illustration. Under the direction of his professors, he began exploring new art mediums.

John’s work has been featured in magazines and other various publications. He prefers creating projects “by hand” and stepping away from the computer. After graduating from JBU in May of 2007, John founded Shorthanded Studio.

John enjoys the slower pace of life in the Midwest (i.e. no traffic) and proving to the art world that artists don’t have to live on the coast or in big cities to be successful.

John is available for freelance illustrations for print, editorials and books. To contact the artist, call (785) 215-1671 or john@shorthandedstudio.com

2007 BFA with honors in Graphic Design and Illustration from John Brown University.

Yes, I still believe in the Kansas City Chiefs (when I first wrote this, it was right after they fired Herm. Now I don’t know what to think, 8 games into the Haley era, haha).
